Over 20% drop out of university science and technology courses.
Why is this? Universities can claim to simply be screening large numbers of entrants into the first year of the course. Dissapointingly in international assessments, Ireland ranks 14th and 16th respectively out of 30 OECD countries in terms of the science and mathematical literacy among 15-year-olds. Thirdly the academic qualifications for entry to science courses at universities are at the low end. Others blame the "spoon feeding system" of secondary education.
For sure universities expose students to real life and the cruel reality of life, study and eventually work. And its not only students with learning difficulties like dyslexia, aspergers, autism, add and so on who under-perform
A LOT of school chidren need to develop independent learning skills. They have to be good at the fundamentals; memory, attention, processing speeds and sequencing. They need strong reading AND language skills. We see a lot of adults in our practice who realise this and start to do something about it. And they make remarable progress. They become sharper, quicker and have better recall. Their improvements along with better language and reading skills gives them greater self-esteem and confidence.
